Day 70

Luke 13:31–35 (NIV)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.” 32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ 33 In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Pray for God to show you something to use from the passage

Questions

What do these verses say about Jesus’ determination to get to Jerusalem?

What do we learn about Jesus’ passion? Should we have the same passion that He displays?

Notes

vs 31- why would some Pharisees tell Jesus to avoid Jerusalem because Herod wants to kill Jesus

· Not all Pharisees would be against Jesus, some could believe Him

· They do not want Jesus in Jerusalem to stir up the people at Passover so they tell Him Herod wants to kill Jesus in hopes He will not go

· They are trying to get Him to respond to Herod in a way that would get Jesus in trouble with the Roman government and thus get Him out of the way

If I had to say I would say the last one. While not all Pharisee would be against Jesus there is no indication that these Pharisees are different than what has already been mentioned. I would think there would be some mentioned if they liked Jesus (see 23:50)

While the Pharisees may not want trouble in Jerusalem they main intent as time passes in Luke has been to get rid of Jesus. (see 6:11, 11:53-54)

vs 32- Jesus answer gives them a little of what they want. Calling Herod a fox is probably derogatory. That he lacks the power to do anything to Jesus that would keep Him from His purpose.

vs 32-33 today, tomorrow, third day - way of saying fairly short amount of time, not to be taken literally.

Key in both verses is Jesus will do what He came for and it will happen in Jerusalem! He once again is pointing to His death.

vs 34 Remember Jesus has just told the people that the Jews have not taken advantage of their chance to enter into heaven through the narrow door. Now Jesus points out it is not for lack of trying on His part. He longs for them to respond correctly and is willing to go to the point of death to prove His desire for them! But they will not respond in the right way. It is their choice! Time after time God has tried to get the Jews to see Him, first through the prophets and now through Jesus but they for the most part will not do it.

vs 35- Because of their refusal to respond they will be abandoned. (the first shall be last) And they will see their mistake when Jesus comes back.

God offers us chance after chance, the question is will we respond before it is too late?

For Christians, do you have the same longing that God shows for people to come to Him? Do we care?
