Day 11

Luke 2:39–52 (NIV)

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. 41 Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. 43 After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” 49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them. 51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Questions

Why would Jesus want to stay in Jerusalem?

Think about how Mary and Joseph are raising Jesus. Would it be any different from how they raised their other children?

What is Mary treasuring in her heart?

Notes

vs 39 they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth-How does the Luke account work with the Matthew account where they go to Eygpt? Some say Luke just doesn't include that part in his account. It doesn't mean it didn't happen but that Luke just didn't see it as important. Note: what it tells me is that Luke and Matthew didn't compare notes before writing. They may have some same sources but not all the same. the gospels aren't there to match each other but to tell what they see as helping the writer explain what he saw important in Jesus' life.

vs 40 Grace of God probably Favor a better translation. God is watching over him, preparing him. Increasing in wisdom also important. The story then relates an example of how that was happening

vs 41 Every year - Parents faithful to God- trying to do right thing for themselves and Jesus

vs 42 Twelve is the final year before Jesus is recognized as an adult (age 13)

vs 43 -full number of days -the Passover and the Unleaved Bread feast lasted seven days, as a good Jew you were expected to be there at least 2

vs 44 the roads would be crowded with people coming and going, Jesus' parents with younger children to look after assumed Jesus' was with friends or family. When stop for the night (20-25 miles down ther road) realize not there.

vs 46 sitting midst teachers- in temple area they were side areas where teachers taught.

I would have loved to hear that teaching session. The amazement is about what he knows not his divinity. Grow in wisdom (vs 40)

vs 48 Sounds just like a mother. Note - Jesus behavior totally out of the norm from him by his parents perspective

vs 49 My father's house or business- Jesus understands why he is here When did he understand that he was special?

vs 50 Parents in spite of what happened at the birth don't get it .

vs 51-52 -repeats vs 40 emphasis also lets you know that Jesus not rebellious to his earth parents but obedient to them (could say different if just had the story)

Treasured repeats vs 19 and vs 33 emphasis Mary trying to take it all in.

vs 52-Grows in favor with God and man - Jesus following the course set for him by God and is well received with people

Overall Note

God picked the parents that would prepare Jesus but ultimately God is in charge of Jesus, not Mary or Joseph (see Luke 8:19-21)

yet Jesus fulfills the commandment about obeying your parents. Why? b/c it is God's way even for God himself. Part of the wisdom of Jesus is applying the knowledge he has to his life
