Day 7

Day Two –Week 2

Luke 1:67–79 (NIV)

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: 68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. 69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us— 72 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham: 74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, 77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

Pray for God to show you something to use from the passage

What other words stick out in your mind

Questions

Why is God praised? Make a list of the things Zechariah mentions.

What is John called to do?

Is John’s call any different than ours?

Notes

Zechariah now sings his song of praise. Think for at least 9 months he had been silent unable to hear of speak and these are the words that come from his mouth. Again even in his song God is actively involved (filled with the Holy Spirit)

Why is God to be praised?

· He has come (could of stayed away and let us fail)

· has redeemed (paid a high price for us)

· has raised up a champion of salvation

· saved us from our enemies ( biggest enemy is death b/c of our sin)

· shown us mercy ( He didn't have to)

· remembered His promise (made with Abraham Gen 12:1-3, Gen 17:1-8)

· enabled us to serve w/o fear

· purified us so we can stand before God

Note: God still to be praised today for the same things

What is John called to do?

· be a prophet (tell of Jesus)to prepare a way (see john 1:45-47 for another example)

· to give knowledge of salvation through sins being forgiven

· to reveal the mercy of God

· to be a light for those in the darkness (show people the way)

· to guide people to peace

Is John's call any different than ours?

vs 69 Because a horn could give an animal the victory in battle, it indicated strength. “Horn of salvation” parallels the meaning of “rock” and “strength” in Psalm 18:2. Thus the Davidic Messiah would be their deliverer (cf. Ps 132:17). IVP Bible Background Commentary : NT

in vs 69 and 72-73 Zech ties what God is doing now to the fulfillment of what God promised Israel from the beginning. Jesus is from David's Family Line and the covenant with Abraham is to be completed

Vs 79 reminds me of Ps 23

Note Vs 76-79 John cannot give salvation only show people where to find it. to give knowledge, to shine in darkness, to guide to peace. Still individual choice.

Vs 80 John was prepared not in the finest of schools but by following the leading of God

1 comment:

  1. Praise God that John`s call is also our call from a God full of grace and mercy.
