Day 25

Day 25 (Day 5 Week 5)

Luke 6:27–36 (NIV)

7 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Pray for God to show you something to use from the passage

Questions

How does vs 22 relate to what Jesus says about loving your enemies?

Is it possible to live the way Jesus tells us to? What keeps you from living this way?

Were you once Jesus’ enemy? How does God’s example help us live the way He wants us to?

Notes

Have to reread vs 22 to understand this section better

Jesus takes 22 and answers the practical question, what do I do when someone hates me, insults me and does me harm?

It is really not that different of an answer than God has given throughout time. Think about, we have done these very things to God and he responds to us in the manner Christ describes here Rom 5:6-8 , Isa 1:2, 18, Hosea 3:1

vs 28- Christian response to

· hate- love, do good to enemies

· curse you- bless them- ask God's favor in their life

· mistreat you- pray for them

vs 29 -30 everyday examples of living the Christian response out in our life

Offering the other cheek is not so much an active pursuit as it is a natural exposure when one reaches out to those who have contempt. Revenge is excluded, while doing good to the hostile is commanded. In the context of persecution, offering the cheek means continuing to minister at the risk of further persecution, as Paul does in Acts 14 and 16. Bock, D. L. (1994). Luke Volume 1: 1:1-9:50. Baker exegetical commentary on the New Testament. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Books.

Cloak- same idea if you are robbed don't let that stop you from going back and helping again even if you are robbed again. Be willing to give love even when you are taken advantage of

Give to those who ask

Let somebody take your things without expecting it back

THIS IS RADICAL!!!! How do I live this? Can I live this way?

Vs 31- Golden rule- live respecting everyone, no prejudices, no belittling, compassion caring, forgiving. giving LIVE THIS WAY!!!!

James 2:8-9

32-34 As a disciple of Christ you live different than the world. It is not about doing things for those who can help you. It’s about doing things for those that cannot in return scratch your back. That’s the difference! John 17:20-21

Limiting Love vs Unconditional Love

vs 35-36 returns to the theme of that is who God is and that what he wants us to be. Like Father Like Son. It is about developing the character of God in our life

Kind to the ungrateful and wicked- That once was me, ungrateful wicked

Merciful - that is what He is to me

Reward- it is not about doing something to get a reward, it is about living this way because it is the best way to live. The benefit is that we are rewarded for living in such away.
