Day 35

Day 35 (Week 7 Day 5)

Luke 8:16–21 (NIV)

No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him.”

19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

Pray for God to show you something to use from the passage

Questions

How do we see Jesus’ grace and His call for us to follow him in this section?

Why does Jesus spend so much time on what we do with His words?

Is Jesus being mean to His family?

Thank God that Jesus makes it possible to be a part of His family!

Notes

To finish up this section about hearing and practicing Jesus' words Luke uses a parable and a story about Jesus' family

The parable takes an absurd thought to get point across. Do you light a lamp and hid it? It loses it purpose. Just like listening to Jesus' words and not using them.

To listen and apply Jesus’ words is best way. Just like taking the light and placing it on a stand so it can give light to the whole room. Jesus' words will give light to our lives.

vs 17, 18- Jesus' words will show who God is. It will become clear how Jesus will fulfill God's purpose (remember John the Baptist’s question in 7:19. John couldn't see it but Jesus is saying be patient If you listen and look you will see God revealed through me. Therefore make sure you listen!

Vs 18 - reminds me of vs 6:38 How you follow through with the practicing of what you hear will determine what you receive. (See 1 Cor 3:11-15) Where is God's grace in this? Jesus not denying the need for grace, in fact His words and actions will teach it. But He is saying your life should change because of grace. The idea of accepting Jesus is accepting Him as Savior and Lord. Jesus has been explaining what the Lord part means.

There are a lot of people walking around thinking they have heaven covered and don't

vs 19-21 Remarkable verses of proof of what he just said. It isn't that Jesus is denying his family, it is that He is adding to it. He is adding those who follow Him! That's me! The reward we have for listening and putting into practice what Jesus says is that we are part of his family That is His grace. We don't deserve it but he gives it. It would be grace if He just made us His servants, but Jesus goes far beyond that! Jesus puts it another way in John 15:11-17.
