Day 27

Luke 6:43–49 (NIV)

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Pray for God to show you something to use from the passage

Questions

What is stored in your heart? (Vs 45)

What makes it hard to put Jesus’ words into practice?

What can help you put them into practice?

Helpful Information

vs 43-45 Figs and grapes were often cultivated together and were two of the most common agricultural products in Palestine, often linked in Old Testament texts. Thorns and thistles were always troublesome to farmers. Keener, C. S., & InterVarsity Press. (1993). The IVP Bible background commentary : New Testament. Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity Press.

Notes

vs 43- 45 The make up of who you are determines what you do.

vs 43-44 Jesus uses the common to explain his point. Who you are can be seen by your actions, by how you live. In other words you can't pretend because who you are will show. (may for a little while fool some but long run you cannot. You can never fool God)

vs 45 -what is stored in my heart? The key is what really makes you tick, Whatever that is going to come out.

vs 46 - many may pretend, may hear Jesus, but they do not put it in practice. They can Say Jesus is Lord but it doesn't mean they treat him this way.

The way you respond to Jesus vs 47

· First step- come - curious, want to see what He is about

· 2nd Step- Hear- listen to what he says

· 3rd Step- put into practice- care enough that the message of Jesus becomes life changing (think about the message He just gave on treating your enemy, that requires change or putting into practice)

vs 48- If you do the steps then you remain standing when the judgment of God comes (see 1 Cor 3:10-16)

if you don't then all that you are is completely destroyed.

This section is about not just saying right words but believing in the one who says them and therefore living them out.

Where is the idea of grace? Is this just a redo of the Old Testament Law? No, it's more than that. Jesus is saying that if you do believe in me then you will do what I ask you. This doesn't exclude grace but Jesus says it is a proof of your belief in Him.

Interesting that this comes after he talks about judging. Jesus is trying to get people to judge themselves before they face the one who is allowed to judge, God Himself. It is almost as if Jesus is saying don't be so concerned with others that you forget about where you stand with God. (that is what the Pharisees were doing) get yourself in right relationship then help others. Learn humility!
