Day 38

Luke 8:40–56 (NIV)

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher any more.” 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” 53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Helpful Information

Ruler of synagogue- sort of like deacon chairman, lead elder , shows while some leaders don't like Jesus others reach out to Him.

Daughter- almost 12 yr. -almost adult in one year could be married

Questions

What does it say that the woman was healed without Jesus directing the healing?

Why would she not speak up when Jesus asked the question about who touched Him?

What does “Go in peace” mean in verse 48? How does that change her view of life? How should it change our view of life?

Notes

vs 40 contrast to what he left across the lake in vs 37, people welcome him,

vs 42- almost crushing him- reminds me of what happens when star out in public, people knew the request from Jairus and wanted to see what would happen.

vs 43-48- Jesus with people crushing in on him knows someone has been healed by his power. Asks, women afraid doesn't respond,

women- bleeding problem with blood flow from uterus, for 12 years, would be considered unclean for all that time. should not have been in the crowd touching others making them unclean. Was she afraid of Jesus reaction or the reaction of the synagogue officials? She speaks up after realizing Jesus wasn't going to let it go.

Jesus knew power had gone from Him- interesting that it was without Him doing it through words and action. Faith of the woman was the key (vs 48). not some words of Jesus. -OUR FAITH is the key for us, for God to work in our lives. the power is there we must believe Matt 7:7-8, Must be in God's plan John 14:13-14

Go in peace- isn't about the feeling but about the state of her relationship with God. Actually more important than the healing!

vs 49-56 Raising from dead-

think about how Jairus must be feeling as Jesus has stopped and dealt with the woman. precious time ticking away, as his daughter is dying. How long had he waited before Jesus came from the other side of the lake? Worst fear comes true. Come tell him she is dead.

vs 49 Jesus can't do anything now- death stronger than any healer, or so they thought.

vs 50 - Don't be afraid- BELIEVE in me- now maybe the woman's healing instead of being a time waster, now maybe it gives him the ability to believe that Jesus can do this!

vs 51 why just Peter, John , James- as mention before they seem to be the three Jesus picks as leaders or at least to see what others don't (Luke 9:28-36)

vs 52-53 People wailing- common practice at death, even some would be paid to wail by richer people. with this being a synagogue leader many would be there. Some not sincere in wailing just doing it because suppose to. Think of people going to a funeral visitation, some do it because suppose to. That's why the wailers can quickly turn to laughter in response to Jesus' command to stop wailing, she only asleep.

Get Up- another strong command. Shows again Jesus stronger than death. My child-really is, think back to vs 21.

vs 56- why not tell? last time he brought boy back to life it was in public 7:14-17. Was the danger once again rising that people were following Him for the wrong reason? Was he trying to stop from just being known as miracle worker?- Wouldn't the story spread anyway? Was it about keeping the girl from being a special?
