Day 44

Luke 9:37–45 (NIV)

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”

41 “O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Questions

Why were the disciples who were left while the others were with Jesus unable to take care of the boy?

Why is Jesus’ reaction so strong to the disciples inability to heal?

Why does Jesus take the moment of celebration in 43 to remind them of what was to happen?

What keeps you from doing the ministry God wants you to do?

Notes

after the magnificence of the transfiguration Jesus comes to find his disciples unable to do what he had already empowered them to do (9:1 all demons) How it must be disappointing to Jesus that his disciples do not get it. (8:24-25, 9:12-13, 9:33) thus he says vs 41 which is a reminder of the exodus of Israel and how they didn't get it. (Deut 32:20)

vs 37- Crowd always seems to be waiting for Jesus.

vs 38 Man apparently not satisfied with disciples, refuses to give up believing Jesus can make this happen.

the only son is important. - who would carry the family name and property. It would be lost if he was not made better.

vs 43-44 The miracle causes God to be praised. But Jesus takes that moment and tells the disciples - don't get caught up in this celebration thinking this is the way it is going to be. The people may be celebrating me as God's man now but soon it will all turn and the people will turn on me. He is trying to get them to see the Christ from God's point of view not what has been made up by the Jews

vs 41,44-45 Jesus message shows exasperation with the disciples. Spent three years with them and they do not get it. They do not understand Jesus’ power and they do not understand his mission. in vs 44 he is plan with them. I am going to be betrayed into this generations hands (You are a part of it) They didn't get it and they were afraid to ask. Remember what Jesus said about Parables (8:9-10) it seems to apply to Jesus having to suffer and the disciples not understanding now. Only after the events of Jesus' death and resurrection do the disciples understand the true role of the Christ. The next section clearly shows the misunderstanding of the disciples of who Jesus is and who they are.
