Day 42

Luke 9:18–27 (NIV)

18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” 19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” 21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? 26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

Questions

Why would Luke mention the prayer of Jesus at this moment?

Why would Jesus not want it out that he was the Christ?

What are the similarities between what Jesus says he will do and what his followers will do?

How do you do verse 23 everyday?

Notes

Interesting to note Luke notes Jesus prays here before he ask the disciples who He is and Jesus also prayed before choosing the disciples Luke 6:12 Luke making prayer the focus as Jesus’ Ministry goes through major transitions

Vs 19 is the same thing Herod has heard. But Jesus wants to knows about those who have been with Him. What do they think. This had to be a topic of conversation with disciples all along

vs 20 Peter as leader or maybe just as the one who is not shy about speaking his mind says Jesus is the Christ.

vs21 Jesus response had to be uplifting for one moment and the disheartening the next. The Christ was going to change everything! Bring the people back to God. Going to establish Jewish kingdom, throw the Romans out. at least that was the popular belief. But Jesus immediately tells them something totally different.

suffer-rejected - killed by the leaders of the Jews! - resurrected?

That is not part of the plan.

vs 23- instead of thinking what great positions they (the disciples) would have in Jesus' earthly government now Jesus telling them they must be willing to die!

the disciples for the first time are asked to understand that the kingdom of God Jesus is talking about is different from the one they had in their minds. The Kingdom is still coming (vs 26, 27) it just is not coming all at once. And there will be suffering before it comes.

It is easy for me to read over this because I am use to the idea. The disciples were not! why Peter says what he says in Mark 8:32-33.

to follow Jesus- deny yourself, take up his cross (ironic that Jesus uses this metaphor) and follow me. What Jesus says he will go through (vs 22) is also what the disciples have to do . How do I do this in my daily life?

vs 25 Jesus must have seen the looks in their eyes and states the answer to the objection they have in their hearts. What good is it if you rule the whole world (disciples thought they were going to do) if your heart isn't right? If you become separated from God? (this verse reminds me of the temptation of Jesus by Satan in the desert 4:5-8 this time it is not just Jesus being tempted, now it is his followers)

vs 26- Jesus letting them know it will not be easy. It not about it being easy it is about it being right! And it is well worth the cost!

vs 27 what does it mean that some will not die before seeing the Kingdom of God? First the audience is not just his disciples now. (vs 23 Said to them all, also Mark 8:34- the crowd) So could be that Jesus is talking about the kingdom beginning with His death and Resurrection.

vs 21- why keep silent about Jesus being the Christ?- It was not time yet for Jesus to start the events that would lead to his death. Saying he was the Christ would have put the Jewish leaders able to kill Jesus sooner than He wanted. Jesus still had preaching and training to do! The crowd also could have tried to force him to be something that He was not suppose to be.
